Under a new Swiss law, the assets of former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier currently frozen in Switzerland could be returned to the Haitian authorities.

Duvalier, known as Baby Doc to Haitians, made an unexpected return to the country at the weekend, after he was ousted nearly 25 years ago.

Six million francs worth of assets linked to the former dictator have been blocked off in Swiss accounts since 1986.

The new law on returning illicit dictator funds will enter force on February,1.

It gives the Federal Cabinet power to block contentious assets.

They will then have up to 10 years to confiscate these assets.

The law was created specifically for the Baby Doc case.

Once the funds are returned, they must be used exclusively to improve the population¹s quality of life, combat crime and improve the legal system.

Duvalier says he has returned to Haiti to help his nation in the wake of last year¹s devastating earthquake.
